NY Transit Museum NY Transit Museum

Taking the "A" Train In 1870, Alfred Ely Beach introduced the first underground form of transportation to New York City. Beach’s pneumatic tube train was clean, quiet, brightly lit, and smooth riding. Its station was even equipped with a grand piano, chandeliers, and a goldfish-stocked fountain. Beach's subway was an immediate New York sensation. In its first year of operation 400,000 visitors paid twenty-five cents to enjoy the block-long ride between Warren Street and Murray Street, and back again. Even though Beach’s subway enjoyed enormous success, it wasn’t until October 27, 1904, that New York City saw the opening of the Interborough Rapid Transit (IRT). On opening day, more than 100,000 people dressed in their finest clothes went underground to be among the first IRT riders. Since then, New York’s Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) has grown to serve a population of 13.2 million people in the 4,000-square-mile area fanning out from New York City through Long Island, southeastern New York State, and Connecticut. The New York Transit Museum is home to 100 years of regional transit history and memorabilia. The Museum is housed in an authentic 1930s subway station in Brooklyn Heights containing vintage subway and elevated cars, antique turnstiles, a working signal tower, and much more. Here you can walk through the first “A” train, which was built in 1930. You can see the oldest NYC rapid transit railway car in existence, view maps and fare collection devices, and many other exhibits regarding the transit history of New York. Now through Citystuff.com, you can purchase New York Transit Museum memorabilia and collectibles online. We carry everything from subway t-shirts to token cuff links, subway map shower curtains, ties, postcards, and coasters. Original and rich in history, Transit Museum souvenirs make great gifts for collectors, history buffs, or anyone who simply loves NYC.
