Ever since graduating from the New York Fashion Institute of Technology, Eileen Duffy has been in search of a collection to call her own. She got her start as an activewear designer for Ralph Lauren and then moved on to design clothes for Monkey Trial, a Paris and Morocco based women’s collection. It wasn’t until 1997 that Duffy found her true calling. That summer she made a set of drawstring clutch bags for a friend’s wedding. Creating these handbags turned out to be a great source of inspiration. In fact, Duffy was so motivated that she stayed up until the wee hours of the morning jotting down ideas. A month later Duffy launched her first line in August of 1997. The collection included whimsical bags made of sheer iridescent organza and a collapsible boning structure. It is this boning skeleton that has become Duffy’s signature. Duffy uses a three-tiered boning system that serves to reinforce the shape of her bags, whilst allowing them to be fully collapsible and travel-friendly. Duffy’s own travels have had a great influence on her designs and fabric choices. She has lived in Paris, Morocco, South America, and Mexico, and the fabrics that she chooses to use retain the feel and look of these exotic locales. Stunning, metallic and nylon organza in eye-catching colors, silk taffeta, and cotton fabrics exude a sense of mystery and romance. Duffy’s handbags also come in a variety of shapes – oval, round, and rectangle – and can be plain, embroidered, or beaded. Today, one can find Duffy’s sacs in a host of other New York department stores and boutiques. Her signature sacs have been featured in Marie Claire, Henri Bendel’s Must-Haves (Summer 1999), and Mode.
