Back on the streets of the city, all becomes a dull, grey, concrete infused cityscape of the hustle and bustle of daily life. But all is not lost. Designer Doris Lopez was born and raised on the Lower East Side of Manhattan, where she was introduced to a variety of ethnic groups that exposed her to different ideas and approaches to life. But it was her early visits to the island of Puerto Rico, where her parents are from, that had the most influence on her. She was overtaken by the exuberant nature of the island with its brightly colored fruits and flowers, its golden sunlight, and its beautiful ocean vistas. When Lopez decided to launch Chorizo, it was with the intention of capturing the spirit of the Caribbean in a refreshing line of bags, hats, shorts, and totes. What the city needed was a new look that wasn’t black or grey, but vibrant, carefree, and allowed for a diversity that was far richer than what the average New Yorker was used to seeing.
